There was plenty of fantastic content taking place at the London Affiliate conference 2018. We know you wouldn’t have been able to catch it all, so, we caught up with 3 speakers from our favourite sessions.

OPPORTUNITIES IN CRYPTO

We spoke with Andy following his wildly popular session, “Affiliate opportunities in crypto”. Andy had plenty to say on where cryptocurrency is headed and how Affiliates can capitalise on the opportunity.

Tiago was so great when we last had him at the show that we couldn’t resist bringing him back. The question he’s asking you is whether you’re overlooking a potentially lucrative Latin American affiliate market… well are you?

NICHOLA STOTT – PROGRESSIVE WEB APPS: THE NEWEST, HOTTEST FEATURES TO ACCELERATE YOUR MOBILE PERFORMANCE

It’s not all about apps anymore, Nichola Stott talked about progressive web apps that can deploy “app-like” features to your mobile site that can emphasise speed and user experience for your mobile site. See what she had to say following her conference.

Did you standout on social media?

Social Media is a big deal for us here at iGB Affiliate, we love to see what you’ve been doing in and around the show. LAC 2018 took place last week so it’s now time for us to pick out our favourite five posts from #LAC2018.

Yes, Chris may be our official photographer but god damn he’s good. When he’s not snapping you mid networking at the conference he’s taking these awesome shots of the amazing Buick that was at the awards.

Now we don’t often give top social media slots to companies but we absolutely loved this post. One of the 666Casino’s devil’s lived up to his name and took a ride on an illegal hoverboard (they are definitely contraband you rebels).

Our favourite bit was the indicating – it was probably indicating… we’ve never used a hoverboard so it could have just been turning… who knows.

Don’t you just love a speaker selfie. SEO rockstar @TheBurbman catches this great one after his session to a packed out conference room 1.

Let’s just say the feedback we got from this one was pretty damn good, expect to see some more SEO brilliance from this guy in the future!

Popular London food blogger @ShonaO’s post #LAC2018 post left us mouthwateringly hungry. Just look at that grub! This one make’s the list because we have an incredible amount of respect for anyone who gets up on the Saturday after attending the iGB Affiliate Awards and goes for a run.

We have even more respect for someone who ORGANISES LAC 2018 and the iGB Affiliate Awards and gets up on the Saturday after the show and goes for a run. We salute you @ShonaO

This year’s social media winner hails from the award-winning Broadway Gaming team (Congratulations guys) who won the Best Bingo Affiliate Program award for the third year runnning.

Rob highlights the double the Broadway Gaming success at the awards and sets in motion their campaign to win a new award.

The inaugural “Most Photogenic Affiliate Team” Award… we will let you know if you get any nominations guys…

Don’t forget to follow us on instagram @iGBAffiliate for great conference, pre-conference and post-conference content.

Social Recruiting

Social Recruiting 150 150 Jason Chong

Did you know that more than 3 billion people use social media? That’s 40% of the world’s population! A stat like that is why more talent acquisition teams are looking to social recruiting to try to reach candidates.

While we know active and passive candidates are using social media, there’s so much we still need to learn about how to attract and engage talent effectively on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.

The Social Recruiting Strategies Conference (#SRSC) is held twice a year to offer fresh ideas from practitioners who are a bit ahead of the pack in using social media. I had the opportunity to attend my first #SRSC last week in San Francisco. What I learned is that no one has social recruiting completely figured out, and I found that comforting.

In HR and TA there always seems to be a new strategy, a new technology or a new channel that suddenly becomes a buzzword, and we’re still trying to understand what it means to us when the next buzzword comes along. (At Rally, we like to break down buzzwords, so here’s our explanation of social recruiting for beginners.)

The fact

@Social

The fact that 3 billion people are using social media is a good enough reason for talent acquisition leaders to put more resources towards figuring out social recruiting. I often hear members of the Rally community say they started their Recruitment Marketing career by becoming responsible for sharing their company’s careers content and job opportunities through social. A question I always ask is:

Do you have dedicated social channels for careers, or are you sharing careers content on your company’s corporate channels?

Renovated Detroit News building boasts snappy design

Renovated Detroit News building boasts snappy design 150 150 Jason Chong

Since Bedrock Real Estate purchased The Detroit News building in 2014, the company has gutted the structure and created a modern workspace with custom-designed furniture by local craftsmen

Who isn’t interested in seeing what the new owners do to your house after the sale?

A visit last week to the old Detroit News building on West Lafayette led to one simple conclusion: Wow — they’ve done a lot, from custom-made furniture to a historically restored lobby and fun newspaper allusions throughout the building design.

“We’ve had a blast designing the space,” said furniture designer Chrissy Fehan of dPop, the outfit that does interiors on all buildings renovated by Dan Gilbert’s Bedrock real-estate empire. It’s great to have a client who lets us do these things.”

Specially designed banquettes? A conference table with seats on swings? Floors completely cleared of all walls and barriers?

Old George G. Booth’s head must be spinning.

News Publisher Booth hired his friend Albert Kahn in 1916 to design the blocklong building, which the newspaper occupied until several years ago when the landmark was sold to Bedrock.

In 2014, The News and the Detroit Free Press, which moved into the bottom floors in 1998, relocated to Minoru Yamasaki’s elegant, modernist annex attached to the 1927 Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago building a block off Campus Martius.

The first shock to anyone who worked in The News building is the impressive, historically accurate restoration of the lobby. Drop-ceilings that obscured its beauty for decades have been ripped out to reveal arched ceilings that give the space unexpected airiness and height.

“For the lobby lamps,” said dPop Lead Designer Kristin Kostrzewski, “we used reproductions and creatively adapted fixtures. So the original glass globe lamp,” the chandelier that once hung at the entrance with its colored map of the world, “is now a hand-hammered metal globe.”

(The original chandelier disappeared in some ill-advised renovation years ago. The lobby, by the way, is accessible to the public. By all means, step inside and take a gander if you’re walking past 615 W. Lafayette. It’s worth the detour.)

Snappy furniture greets you as you walk in the main entrance, while Detroit artist Leon Dickey’s “Love Letters,” a large wall sculpture that looks a bit like randomly rolled sheets of blank newsprint, dominates the lobby’s east wall.

Upstairs on the third floor, old News editors and reporters will find the former newsroom utterly transformed, though the wood paneling that covered part of it has been mostly preserved.

Utterly unlike anything ever seen in the old newsroom is the Swing Table designed by Duffy London, a British firm that creates amusing, esoteric furniture.

Much like a swing set, the five seats on either side of the large conference table hang from an overhead bar and, well, swing like mad. (The table, happily, is stationary.)

This table has been a big hit

@BuildingConstruction

said Fehan. And really — who could be surprised?

On a floor where dozens of entry-level mortgage bankers do their training, the table adds a little zip to that most-tedious of office obligations, the staff meeting.

Housing about 1,000 Quicken Loans employees and some 375 at Molina Healthcare of Michigan, “The building,” said Kostrzewski, “is active seven days a week. And people are here from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.”

Many of the design touches throughout were created by local artisans.

For example, the large, snazzy-looking black banquettes on several floors — including one huge one that incorporates red metal into the design — were created by Virtuoso Design + Build on Detroit’s east side.

The banquettes, like the Swing Table, are reportedly popular. Trainee bankers study on them, according to Robert McDonald, Quicken Loans facilities site leader, and on occasion, when necessary, catch a nap.

A large conference table with a historic picture of old newspaper carriers printed right on the wood was created by Detroit furniture designer Brian DuBois.

All signage, like on conference rooms named for other U.S. newspapers around in 1916, was crafted by Livonia’s Jiffy Signs.

The aim in the entire redesign, said Kostrzewski, “was to create a comfortable living room atmosphere” for today’s unstructured, adaptable workplaces.

“We wanted to transform work spaces to create more collaborative and open environments that encourage productivity and encourage people to want to come to work,” said Jennifer Janus, dPop chief operating officer.

Workplaces of the World, It’s Time to Tell Your Story!

Workplaces of the World, It’s Time to Tell Your Story! 150 150 Jason Chong

What an incredible time it is for storytelling. There are so many accessible ways to create stories and so many mediums on which to share them. If you watched any of the Golden Globes this past week, you heard the cries for even more storytelling and story-sharing – it’s through our stories that we all grow.

But it’s not just the stories that are being requested by the masses, it’s “honesty” and “authenticity”. I put these words in quotes because let’s be honest, what we see on screen is generally filtered to various extents, but undoubtedly, the real is craved. I wonder, what if each of our workplaces had a channel that tuned right in to what was happening within our office walls? Who would watch? What’s uniquely happening there? Who would get hooked?

Ever since the very first workplace documentary I made, I was hooked on sharing people’s job stories. Not just because it’s so interesting to meet different people, but because there’s a lot of really good jobs out there whose stories simply are not told. Seemingly boring jobs that could absolutely be someone’s dream job – someone who might not be of age to work quite yet.

Something else I notice happens when our workplaces begin telling their stories – they learn a whole lot about themselves in the process. If you want to crack the code on your company’s employment brand, you have to begin finding and learning its stories. Those stories are not just about covering the responsibilities of the job, it’s revealing the tone, pace, approach and experiences of the people successfully executing that job.

When I met Train Engineer Jackie Pettyjohn, we shadowed her throughout two of the nightshifts she has been working for 20 years on the rail yard in Philadelphia. It was through her story that employees rallied around to celebrate her, but ultimately, surface an enthusiasm and a spirit that represents the company so purely. It’s beautiful.

And then there was Headend Technician Peter Imler, who was working on Long Beach Island for Comcast.

A man who typically works alone most of the day, but is part of a large organization and has a grand responsibility. Peter has accomplished a lot of brave work from his post, and it serves his colleagues well to know more about it.

For those who have begun to take on the positions of “employment branding” and “recruitment marketing” – what is our rallying cry? Can there be an overarching goodwill mission to what we are all doing, recognizing that together we can tell the stories of the workplaces of the world? We can expose individuals to ideas, roles and opportunities they never knew were available.

This has inspired my cry, “Workplaces of the world – tell your stories!” You’ll not only inspire your future workforce, you’ll reveal your company’s true spirit in the meantime.

Calling all Cable Installers, Beauty Editors, and Chefs

Calling all Cable Installers, Beauty Editors, and Chefs 150 150 Jason Chong

A classic recruiting technique, realistic job previews are a best practice in our industry. It gets its own fancy government definition for a reason: it has worked across all industries and all levels for years*. Give candidates the real deal scoop so they can opt in and out at apply, not two weeks or two months or two minutes on the job (all that time, money, energy wasted, turnover costs astronomical, nooooo!).

How have realistic job previews been creatively imagined in recruitment marketing or media?

Employee-generated content

This is a video from a few years ago where an AT&T premises technician filmed one of their climbs. This person takes so much pride in his work and what he does, he not only filmed part of his workday, but he shared it with the world. What I like best is the varied comments below, like:

“Is there a difference in training between buried wire technicians and premises technicians? What exactly is it?”

“I was a perm tech in fort Worth last year until OCT. I had to resign to handle (personal business). Anyways, on Wednesday I got hired back on finally. I can’t wait to hit pole yard again.”

“What is this? AT&T Basic Training? lol, looks fun”

Today it’s possible to create spaces where people want to share experiences or ask questions that allow them to decide to apply to a position or not. That interaction was missing from the one way communication years ago.
